  1. Christians: Start Standing Up To These Assholes!

    nonplussedbyreligion:

I just read these two posts over at Joe.My.God:

Colorado’s Batman Shooting Happened Because God Is Angry About The Gays

“The AFA Journal has been dealing with denominations that no longer believe in the God of the Bible, they no longer believe that Jesus is the only way of salvation, they teach that God is OK with homosexuality, this is just increasing more and more. It is mankind shaking its fist at the authority of God. We are seeing his judgment. You know, some people talk about ‘God’s judgment must be just around the corner,’ we are seeing it.” - Fred Jackson, news director for the American Family Association.

Colorado’s Batman Shooting Happened Because God Is Angry About Abortion

“In our perverse society, a woman exercising her ‘right to choose’ death for her innocent child represents ‘courage,’ while the Batman shooter’s ‘choice’ to kill innocent moviegoers represents cowardice. And it is. They are both acts of cowardice. The only relevant difference is the victims’ age. Let me be clear: Am I comparing this incredibly wicked, illegal mass murder at Aurora’s Century Theatre to the incredibly wicked, legal mass murder committed at Planned Parenthoods across the country each day? Absolutely – and you can quote me on it.

“But again, like the Batman murders, our nation’s 55-plus million abortion murders post Roe v. Wade are not the cause of our culture of death; they are merely a symptom. Ultimately, the cause stems from something much less complicated. We as a nation – as a people – have turned our backs on God. We have rebelled against Him and have forgotten that it was He and He alone who gave us 200-plus years of prosperity, unprecedented in world history. We have left Him, so why are we surprised He’s leaving us? We have said, ‘We don’t need you, leave us alone.’ And so He has.” - Hate group leader Matt Barber, writing for World Net Daily

One of the things I make an effort to do here is not make generalizations.  I don’t lump all believers together as I’m fully aware that within each religious group lives those who are deplorable human beings.

Quite often other non-theists and I are criticized and attacked for our opinions about religion.  I’m not only talking about here on Tumblr, but also in the real world, because saying we don’t believe in gods automatically marks us as contributing the the destruction of society.

I’ve blogged about this before on numerous occasions, but it needs to be said again. Stop directing your anger at us and focus it on those making your religion look terrible.  Telling us that not all Christians are alike, something we already know, does not change the fact that the most hateful members of your religion have the loudest voice.  They may not always have the largest numbers, but they reach a bigger audience.

Your pastor preaching on Sunday morning that the opinion of groups like the AFA are wrong does nothing to stop them.  Going on the attack on blogs won’t change the fact that these people exist. Few, if any well known Christian leader with a large viewing/listening audience stands up and says publicly that these people are being assholes and poor representation of the their faith.  However, when I call them on it, I’m attacking them!

I am so disgusted with them repeatedly turning moments of tragedy into platforms from which to launch their hateful ideals.  Can you guys please put some of the time and effort you devote to writing long rebuttals to non-theists into shutting these hateful people up.  It’s really easy to fight with those outside of your faith, but not so easy to stand up to those poorly representing it.  How about taking the hard road more often.   After all, most non-theists were believers, we’ve already heard what you have to say.  Those within your faith who seem to have forgotten about love and respect are the ones you need to be taking on.
