"Thus, though I dislike to differ with such a great man, Voltaire was simply ludicrous when he said that if god did not exist it would be necessary to invent him. The human invention of god is the problem to begin with."
- Christopher Hitchens (God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything)I have to say that Hitch is right, that is the problem to begin with. But while I don’t think it would be necessary to invent god given what we know now, I do think that it would be highly likely that we would, and did around 10,000 different times during the course of human history, in order to comfort and control during those dim beginnings.
Anyone who doesn’t believe in all 10,000 gods from human history, knows that we routinely invent gods, every characteristic of the abrahamic god has been shared by scores of other gods and by their human inventors. Now, why is it such an unimaginable leap of atheist “faith” to believe that this one: the god of Abe, is just another human invention that’s been tweaked and refined throughout history to suit the times. Could anything be more obvious?
Imagine that someone was fully convinced without a doubt that unicorns, gnomes, monsters, dragons, Santa Claus, the chupacabra, vampires, Nessy, and Bigfoot were all absolute bullshit BUT! Fairies are real and they know it in their heart. They see the work of the fairies all around them, plain as day. Plus, there’s a whole culture built around fairies in literature, poetry, movies, art and folklore so they must be real. It’s just that only the people who want to see them can. Doesn’t that remind you of a theist? “All those other gods were obviously bullshit, but my god is the real, one true god.”
