In a world dominated by magical thinking, superstition and misinformation, give yourself the benefit of doubt. This is one skeptic's view of the Universe.

"Tell people there’s an invisible man in the sky who created the universe, and the vast majority believe you. Tell them the paint is wet, and they have to touch it to be sure."

-George Carlin

“If people are good only because they fear punishment, and hope for reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed”.

-Albert Einstein

“Skeptical scrutiny is the means, in both science and religion, by which deep thoughts can be winnowed from deep nonsense.”

-Carl Sagan

The person who is certain, and who claims divine warrant for his certainty, belongs now to the infancy of our species. It may be a long farewell, but it has begun and, like all farewells, should not be protracted.

-Christopher Hitchens

After the hate group, Westboro Baptist Church, decided to turn their attention from desecrating fallen soldiers to desecrating the victims in Newtown, CT, Anonymous released private contact information on Fred Phelps Sr, as well as the rest of the group’s membership (all of whom seem to be related).

Salon: Westboro Baptist Church, notorious for picketing the funerals of fallen troops with “God Hates Fags” placards, announced Saturday that they would picket Sandy Hook elementary school, where 20 children and six adults were shot dead Friday. Tweets from the Phelps family suggest they believe the horrors in Connecticut are a punishment from God for gay marriage. Hacker collective Anonymous was swift to respond, releasing private information of  Westboro members including email addresses, phone numbers and home addresses.

There’s a really good argument at this point that we might well be the most powerful organization on Earth. The entire world right now is run by information. Anonymous Just Deleted CBS.com and Took Down Universal

Taking a shorter break than their last vacation, Anonymous is back at it already. Reports are coming in that they had completely knocked out CBS.com and are continuing their revenge spree. The CBS takedown wasn’t your regular DDoS attack because if you went to CBS.com at the time Anon attacked it, there was nothing except an index page with a single file. That’s it. Basically, Anonymous gained access to CBS.com and deleted EVERYTHING.

CBS.com has managed to put itself back up but we’ll be on the lookout of Anonymous’ next move. This is going to be interesting. Last time Anon went on a revenge spree, well, the DOJ, RIAA, MPAA, Universal, EMI, FBI and others all got a piece of the takedown fun.

Update: Looks like they just took down UniversalMusic.com again too!

Update 2: Anon is now going after websites in Brazil. The Hacker News reports that websites of Brazil’s federal district, the city of Tangara da Serra and popular Brazilian singer Paula Fernandes have been brought offline in a DDoS attack. Anonymous’ message on the affected websites? “If Megaupload is down, you are down too.”

Update 3: Vivendi, a French media company involved in music, film, TV, video games, etc., has been brought down too. Vivendi used to own Universal

Alan Moore on Masks and the OWS Protests

“I suppose when I was writing V for Vendetta I would in my secret heart of hearts have thought: wouldn’t it be great if these ideas actually made an impact? So when you start to see that idle fantasy intrude on the regular world… It’s peculiar. It feels like a character I created 30 years ago has somehow escaped the realm of fiction.”

Online hackers Anonymous Mexico threaten to expose cartel’s secrets | Houston Chronicle

Anonymous from Veracruz, Mexico, and the world, we want you to know that a member has been kidnapped when he was doing Paperstorm in our city. We demand his release. We want the army and the navy to know that we are fed up of the criminal group Zetas, who have concentrated on kidnapping, stealing and blackmailing in different ways.+

Follow the link for the Houston chronicle’s English transcript and commentary.

The Occupy Wall Street protests have been going on for a month. And it seems the FBI and NYPD have had help tracking protesters’ moves thanks to [an extreme right-wing] computer security expert who gained access to one of the group’s internal mailing lists, and then handed over information on the group’s plans to the authorities as well as corporations targeted by protesters.

Since the Occupy Wall Street protest began on September 17, New York security consultant Thomas Ryan has been waging a campaign to infiltrate and discredit the movement…

As part of their intelligence-gathering operation, [Ryan’s] group gained access to a listserv used by Occupy Wall Street organizers called September17discuss. On September17discuss, organizers hash out tactics and plan events, conduct post-mortems of media appearances, and trade the latest protest gossip. On Friday, Ryan leaked thousands of September17discuss emails to [right-wing smear artist,] blogger Andrew Breitbart, who is now using them to try to smear Occupy Wall Street…

[W]hile Ryan was monitoring September17discuss, he was forwarding interesting email threads to contacts at the NYPD and FBI, including special agent Jordan T. Loyd, a member of the FBI’s New York-based cyber security team.

Yes, C’mon Anons!

Urgent message from anonymous

occupywallstreet:

Citizens of the world

We are Anonymous! Recently something very disturbing has come to our attention. You must take all notices and information claiming to be ‘Anonymous’ with a grain of salt. Consider EVERYTHING.

Operation Invade Wall Street is bullshit! It is a fake planted operation by law enforcement and cyber crime agencies in order to get you to undermine the Occupy Wall Street movement. It proposes you use depreciated tools that have known flaws such as LOIC.

Anonymous would never tell you to use LOIC - Not after the arrests and failures of Operation Payback.

Anonymous wouldn’t attack NYSE on a HOLIDAY - It is debatable if Anonymous would ever even attack NYSE.

Be wary friends!

We should be aware that such things are going to continue to happen, and spread awareness of methods the establishment uses to undermine movements like this. Always seek verification before following up any supposed plans with action.

Anonymous sets it's sights on Facebook

The Hacktivist group has announced plans to take down Facebook for the usually reasons: invasion of privacy, compliance with totalitarian governments. They’ve set a date. This could get interesting.

Anonymous Strikes Back at Italian Cops with 8 Gigabyte Leak

wavesfadingwords:

An Anonymous and AntiSec affiliated hacker has released an alleged 8 gigabytes of data from Italy’s CNAIPIC cyber defense police squad. The dump holds data on defense, corporate, and intelligence agencies from around the world. Plus goofy personal photos.

Clearly a retaliatory attack after Italian cops arrested Anon suspects earlier this month, the data cache could be seriously damaging if its contents hold up to what’s claimed:

Today we reveal a whole Load of stuff (estimated leak would be over 8Gb) from such owned institutions, just to make it clear all of this stuff was stored on CNAIPIC evidence servers for years while people are doing time in jail waiting for the trial while CNAIPIC used the evidence in the global spy game galore:
Egypt: Ministry of Transport and Communication
Australia: Ministry of Defence
Russia: Atomstroyexport, Diaskan, Sibneft, Gazprom etc.
Ukraine: several embassies and consulates on it’s territory
Nepal: Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Belarus: Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Belneftehim, Belspetzexport
Gibraltar, Cyprus, Cayman Islands etc: Tecno Develp, Line Holdings, Dugsberry Inc, Alpha Prime, Alpha Minerals etc.
Vietnam: PetroVietnam (PTSC), Ministry of Natural Resources (MONRE)
USA: EXXON MOBIL, US Department of agriculture and hundreds of attorneys and DOJ accounts including: McCallion & Associates LLP, Goodkind, Labaton, Rudoff & Sucharow, LLP, and hundreds of bullshit agencies we don’t even know why we pay taxes to support all of them.

NATO hacked by Anonymous

thelifetimenetwork:

zeitgeistmovement:

While law enforcement officials and investigators worldwide are largely condemning an attack on such an established and powerful institution, Anonymous has fired back, taking a jab at the operations of associated governments. In a document released in conjunction with fellow hackers LulzSec, Anonymous responds to a message from FBI Deputy Assistant Director Steve Chabinsky in which he calls Anonymous’ actions “unacceptable.”

“Now let us be clear here, Mr. Chabinsky, while we understand that you and your colleagues may find breaking into websites unacceptable, let us tell you what WE find unacceptable,” responds Anonymous.

The hackers add their own complaints against “the FBI and international law authorities” include “Governments lying to their citizens and inducing fear and terror to keep them in control by dismantling their freedom piece by piece” and “Corporations aiding and conspiring with said governments while taking advantage at the same time by collecting billions of funds for federal contracts we all know they can’t fulfil.”

“We become bandits on the Internet because you have forced our hand,” write the hackers. “The Anonymous bitchslap rings through your ears like hacktivism movements of the 90s. We’re back – and we’re not going anywhere. Expect us.”

thank god, fuck NATO, no sympathy for war criminals and thugs
