In a world dominated by magical thinking, superstition and misinformation, give yourself the benefit of doubt. This is one skeptic's view of the Universe.

"Tell people there’s an invisible man in the sky who created the universe, and the vast majority believe you. Tell them the paint is wet, and they have to touch it to be sure."

-George Carlin

“If people are good only because they fear punishment, and hope for reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed”.

-Albert Einstein

“Skeptical scrutiny is the means, in both science and religion, by which deep thoughts can be winnowed from deep nonsense.”

-Carl Sagan

The person who is certain, and who claims divine warrant for his certainty, belongs now to the infancy of our species. It may be a long farewell, but it has begun and, like all farewells, should not be protracted.

-Christopher Hitchens

I certainly think that the Romney campaign would be smart to serve Chick-fil-A at the convention for one occasion. I think that would send a pretty clear signal to people without having done very much except to make it happen.

Classic, Shep Smith reacts to Mitt Romney’s statement about Newt Gingrich’s departure from the race.

"Politics is weird… And creepy. And now I know, lacks even the loosest attachment to anything like reality."

We have been studying Washington politics and Congress for more than 40 years, and never have we seen them this dysfunctional. In our past writings, we have criticized both parties when we believed it was warranted. Today, however, we have no choice but to acknowledge that the core of the problem lies with the Republican Party.

The GOP has become an insurgent outlier in American politics. It is ideologically extreme; scornful of compromise; unmoved by conventional understanding of facts, evidence and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition.

When one party moves this far from the mainstream, it makes it nearly impossible for the political system to deal constructively with the country’s challenges.

Let’s just say it: The Republicans are the problem. (via ryking)

The 2012 presidential race may be remembered as the “Year of the Super PAC.” This new breed of political action committees has already spent more than $53 million on the 2012 congressional and presidential races—and Election Day is still nine months away. Who are the biggest playersin the presidential campaign and how much cash have they got?”

Yeah, you know, except during the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Vietnam War, or the Cold War.

Texas Federal Judge Demagogued By Gingrich Fights Back — ‘You Should Be Ashamed’

Texas federal Judge Fred Biery is a key villain in GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich’s narrative about why federal judges are out of control and must be intimidated into submission. Gingrich routinely cites a previous decision by Biery holding that the Constitution does not permit a public school district to sponsor a student-led prayer at graduation to justify eliminating courts that displease Gingrich […] In his order approving the settlement, Biery includes an unusual “personal statement” directed at the many lawmakers who, like Gingrich, have painted him as some kind of enemy of religion:

To the United States Marshal Service and local police who have provided heightened security: Thank you.

To those Christians who have venomously and vomitously cursed the Court family and threatened bodily harm and assassination: In His name, I forgive you.

To those who have prayed for my death: Your prayers will someday be answered, as inevitably trumps probability.

To those in the executive and legislative branches of government who have demagogued this case for their own political goals: You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Biery also includes a clever dig at the many Christian right groups that have attacked him:

“Any American can pray, silently or verbally, seven days a week, twenty four hours a day, in private as Jesus taught or in large public events as Mohammed instructed.”

Touché, Judge. And thank you for your service.

Newt Gingrich says the unemployed ‘sit at home’ and ‘do nothing’ and that unemployment benefits violate the Declaration of Independence (Found at Right Wing Watch)

Let’s overlook Gingrich for a second here and listen to the applause of his faithful followers.  Who are these people and where do they work?  Clearly they’re not one of the people I know personally with advanced degrees who were unable to find work in their fields, or any other field until recently.   They’re obviously not one of the many who are under-employed.  People who lived within the means of their previous salary only to find themselves having to work jobs that don’t pay nearly as well just so they can survive.  Of course there are those that sit at home and do nothing while they collect unemployment benefits.  However, to make this kind of asinine blanket statement, and to have it met with such applause, proves just how disconnected both Newt and his supporters are.  Un-freaking-believable. ~ Kim

Trailer:
Newt Gingrich appears in the right wing alt-history documentary/Christian call to action, “One Nation Under God”

The film claims that key concepts in the United States Constitution are based on scriptures from books in the Old Testament of the Bible, including Leviticus and Deuteronomy. Also starring David Barton, the Ken Ham of American history.

Newt comes in at the 5 min. mark:

“I can be pretty tolerant, but I can’t imagine being comfortable with an atheist in the presidency. And frankly we should be very direct about this fight. I for one am tired of the long trend towards a secular atheist system of thought dominating our colleges; dominating our media.

So, I for one am sick and tired- I mean, I have a PhD in history, I’m allowed to say it as an academic- half of what is taught in American colleges and universities is false, it is a lie, we oughta take it head on!

Let me be clear. I’m not talking about physics or chemistry or all those things I’m talking about the academic Left which dominates American history; dominates American social studies and is determined to propagandize our children with values and ideas alien to the American tradition and alien to American civilization. “

Newt has long seen a partnership with Christian right to be strategically convenient and the secular/atheist boogie man is his favorite theme.
