In a world dominated by magical thinking, superstition and misinformation, give yourself the benefit of doubt. This is one skeptic's view of the Universe; natural wonders and supernatural blunders.

"Tell people there’s an invisible man in the sky who created the universe, and the vast majority believe you. Tell them the paint is wet, and they have to touch it to be sure."

“Skeptical scrutiny is the means, in both science and religion, by which deep thoughts can be winnowed from deep nonsense.”

The person who is certain, and who claims divine warrant for his certainty, belongs now to the infancy of our species. It may be a long farewell, but it has begun and, like all farewells, should not be protracted.

Ebola Outbreak: Guinea Health Team of 8 Massacred

(When conspiracy theories turn deadly)

On Thursday night, government spokesman Albert Damantang Camara said the victims had been “killed in cold blood by the villagers”.

The bodies showed signs of being attacked with machetes and clubs, officials say.

Six people have been arrested and the village is now reportedly deserted.

The motive for the killings has not been confirmed, but the BBC’s Makeme Bamba in Guinea’s capital, Conakry, says many villagers accuse the health workers of spreading the disease.

Others still do not believe that the disease exists.

Last month, riots erupted in Nzerekore, 50 km (30 miles) from Wome, after rumours that medics who were disinfecting a market were contaminating people.

Hobby Lobby apparently has no “religious” objection to sourcing its goods from China, a communist, atheistic country that restricts the number of children its citizens can have and has a history of forced abortion. What a joke! Except that their lawsuit isn’t a laughing matter. It’s costing taxpayer $ and threatening women’s rights in the U.S. Another case of: “If you are not outraged, you are not paying attention.”

Over 300,000 children are murdered inside Planned Parenthood clinics every year. http://ift.tt/ITL4iD

BULL FUCKING SHIT.
My mother was three months pregnant with me when she waltzed into Planned Parenthood. But she didn’t get an abortion. Not because she had a ‘sudden change of heart’ nor because someone ‘lead her Jesus’ but because she went there to make sure I was and would be born healthy.
My parents were two poor young adults in their late teens and early twenties when I was conceived. They lived in a tiny apartment and had no insurance, but they wanted me. My mom drove herself to Planned Parenthood from the third month of pregnancy to the fifth (until she finally got medical insurance.) There she got the ultrasound screenings, found out I was a girl, got the prenatal vitamins and were referred to see the physician I’ve been going to from my birth to now.
Thanks to Planned Parenthood, I was born healthy at six pounds, seven ounces. I had no malformations, no preventable disorders and no preventable health issues. The only thing that occurred was I was in ‘fetal distress’ and was born a week before the due date.
I ‘made it out alive’ and thanks to Planned Parenthood I ‘made it out’ healthy.
Take this bullshit elsewhere.
TL;DR?: Read the bold.

When an employer’s religious convictions are prioritized over his or her employee’s right to conveniently access legal medical care, the issue isn’t conscience, but privilege. The groups that make this argument truly believe they deserve the power to influence the private medical decisions made by others. That’s a clear violation of the Constitution. The federal government cannot grant one dogmatic interpretation of one religion privilege over all other beliefs and perspectives. But that’s exactly what these sectarian groups want.

Why Our Health Care Is Obscenely Expensive, In 12 Charts

thebicker:

robot-heart-politics:

design-justice:

Short version: we spend more on hospital stays, medicine, surgery, and treating chronic conditions, but we don’t go to the doctor as much. In other words, we don’t get care until we’re already too sick for good outcomes and preventative treatment is less expensive than treating chronic illness.

In other words: When people say, “There’s no healthcare crisis, the emergency room can’t turn you away,” what they’re really saying is, “You should have to wait until your life is in danger to be able to see a doctor, and also, I don’t give a shit about healthcare costs.”

This is another reason that whole “I’m a healthy millennial so I don’t need health insurance” thing pissed me off: Preventive care is super important! Seeing a doctor before you’re hospital-grade sick is super important!

Oh, but ‘forcing’ people to have health insurance is a bad thing - but not forcing people to have guns!
This is stupid.

Yeah, so they are mandating the purchase of a particular product… Irony overload!
