Slick, Paranoid Tea Party Video Aims for Violent Insurrection

abaldwin360:

(AlterNet) - Attendees at last week’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) were reportedly thrilled by a short sci-fi video depicting a dictatorial near-future government and the underground “Movement on Fire” that springs up to resist it. The video, a thinly veiled advertisement for violent insurrection from the “Tea Party Patriots” group, boasts professional acting and Hollywood production values. But underneath its bright, professional sheen lurk dark overtones of End Times paranoia that will resonate with millions of American fundamentalists. Its apocalyptic imagery is as ancient as Revelations, its glossy look as modern as a Revlon ad, and its near-subliminal barrage of rapid-cut imagery rings with the terror-fueled sermons of 1,000 preachers.

This isn’t just the fringe element of the right, it IS the right. This kind of thing is becoming more and more mainstream with them and it’s quite frankly horrifying.

Rand Paul at CPAC about foreign aid to Egypt: ‘Not one penny more to countries that are burning our flag!’

That’s right, buddy. No more Social Security checks for you and your American friends.

So, it’s the country of Egypt that burns the American flag? It’s not individuals in the country? Rand Paul holds all of Egypt responsible for the things any Egyptians do? Because if I had to be responsible for things other Americans do, I’d like to get off right now.

CPAC 2013: And so we begin

Allen West is, as usual, more animated about things. He informs us that there is “nothing liberals fear more than a black american who wants a better life.” Most of his speech is, in fact, about liberals, and his description of them sounds absolutely horrifying. California is singled out as a hellhole, a place Americans are fleeing from to join up with redder states. Then he chastises liberals for being “divisive.” By the time he ends his speech, my head hurts. Note to self: bring more coffee, next time.

The odd thing about it is that all things good, like charity and feeding people, are considered conservative. All bad things, like giving people welfare, are considered liberal. Already I have noticed this in all speakers: much of what is said that is positive and noble and charitable could just as easily come from a liberal, a socialist or an unabashed leftist, individual phrases word-for-word. Then come the negative parts, vowing those things to be obviously conservative and outrage that the liberals would be against those things.

BigGovernment.com Founder Andrew Breitbart Dies at 43

cognitivedissonance:

Holy shit:

Andrew Breitbart, Matt Drudge protégé and provocative proprietor of several right-leaning Web sites, died at the age of 43 early this morning. According to a statement cross-posted to his stable of Web sites, including BigGovernment.com and BigHollywood.com, “Andrew passed away unexpectedly from natural causes shortly after midnight this morning in Los Angeles.” ABC News spoke with the Los Angeles coroner, who confirmed Breitbart’s death

He leaves behind a wife and four kids. The New Yorker has an interesting profile of him from last May here

Wow…

So get ready for the right wing conspiracy machine. Since Andrew Breitbart just gave a speech at CPAC claiming to have “bombshell videos of Obama in his college days”, palling around with terrorists. He claimed that he had plans to release these videos during the general election as proof of Obama’s “radicalism”. Now he’s dead. I’ll be surprised if a conspiracy theory involving Obama having him killed does not makes it’s way into the Tea Party narrative.

Why Right-Wingers (and Media Hacks) Are Totally Wrong About What Americans Believe — We’re Becoming Less, Not More, Conservative

abaldwin360:

Despite some misguided triumphalism on the Right, America is not getting more conservative. In fact, if you look at lots of public opinion polls, you’ll find that just the opposite is true—Americans’ views on the most pressing issues of the day are actually solidly progressive, with strong support for the social safety net and growing support for once-controversial social issues like marriage equality.

Nevertheless right-wing and center-contrarian media outlets love to jump on polls that identify Americans as conservative, without ever asking what the difference is between what your average Ohioan means by that word and whatMarco Rubio means when he announces at CPAC that “the majority of Americans are conservatives.”

(Rubio’s inaccurate comments sparked a controversy and prompted a vehement reaction from Rachel Maddow this week, as Politifact debunked his statement—but then rated it “mostly true” anyway, proving the pervasiveness of the myth of conservative America.)

Newt Gingrich says the unemployed ‘sit at home’ and ‘do nothing’ and that unemployment benefits violate the Declaration of Independence (Found at Right Wing Watch)

Let’s overlook Gingrich for a second here and listen to the applause of his faithful followers.  Who are these people and where do they work?  Clearly they’re not one of the people I know personally with advanced degrees who were unable to find work in their fields, or any other field until recently.   They’re obviously not one of the many who are under-employed.  People who lived within the means of their previous salary only to find themselves having to work jobs that don’t pay nearly as well just so they can survive.  Of course there are those that sit at home and do nothing while they collect unemployment benefits.  However, to make this kind of asinine blanket statement, and to have it met with such applause, proves just how disconnected both Newt and his supporters are.  Un-freaking-believable. ~ Kim

CPAC Panel Speaker Says Anti-Bullying Policies Led To 'Thought Control'

Focus On The Family’s Candi Cushman said at a CPAC panel titled “In the Name of ‘Tolerance’: Countering Sexual Identity Politics in Schools & Wait No More” said that anti-bullying policies aimed at protecting gay students have led to “thought control.”

The panel, according to CPAC’s program, was focused on how to “respectfully and practically counter activist agendas in public schools and protect parents’ and students’ rights, as well as how we can work to find ‘forever families’ for the more than 100,000 legal orphans waiting in our country’s foster-care system,” and was sponsored by CitizenLink (which was formerly known as Focus on the Family Action).

So just let kids be driven to suicide by bullies.  Those are some real family values.

Because making you feel small and worthless, is my right as a Christian American! God Hates Fags and what not. Don’t take my guns, Barack Obama! Don’t abort your babies! It’s my right to make a law that says you can’t get the pill, because I’m a Christian, and I’m a marginalized majority! Fuck the poor!!
