In a world dominated by magical thinking, superstition and misinformation, give yourself the benefit of doubt. This is one skeptic's view of the Universe; natural wonders and supernatural blunders.

Anti-trans trolling spree forces Wikipedia to ban U.S. House staffers for third time
Aug. 21 2014
Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, has once again blocked all computers from the U.S. House of Representatives in order to stop malicious edits to popular pages on the site.
According to The Hill, Wikipedia instituted the ban on Wednesday night after users operating from the House IP address made a series of anti-trans edits to the page for Netflix series Orange is the New Black.
Anonymous users operating from the Republican-led House were persistently re-editing the page to slur trans actress Laverne Cox by mis-gendering her mentions on the show’s page. For instance, they changed Cox’s description from “real transgender woman” to “real man pretending to be a woman.”
One user in particular went on an anti-trans editing spree this week, changing entries on multiple pages related to transgenderism until Wikipedia administrators were forced to step in.
“An obvious transphobe is using this IP to edit the article on transphobia,” the Hill quoted one Wikipedia user as saying.
“I have no problem with Congressional staffers editing Wikipedia,” said another user to the anti-trans editor. “I have a problem only with YOU vandalizing Wikipedia.”
The person using the IP address responded — without revealing their identity — that the malicious edits were in fact “official business” endorsed by a member of the House. Their changes, they said, were intended to bring “fairness” to the discussion.

On the plus side, the admins are not putting up with this bullshit. They stepped in. They said, “No, you can’t do that. We don’t care if you work for a Representative. We don’t care if you *are* one. If you want to be a bigoted troll, then GTFO. You’re not doing it here.”

Wash. state megachurch closes branches after founder is caught calling women ‘penis homes’

Washington megachurch Mars Hill announced that it is closing several branches, and has dismissed a pastor after he recently called for the resignation of founder Mark Driscoll, who had created controversy with his anti-LGBT and anti-woman views.

In a letter posted to his Dropbox account, Pastor Mark Dunford said that he had been dismissed from the church’s Portland branch after calling for Driscoll’s resignation, saying that the founder created a “culture of fear” inside the church.

An August profile of Driscoll published by The New York Times explained that he had been accused “of plagiarizing, of inappropriately using church funds and of consolidating power to such a degree that it has become difficult for anyone to challenge or even question him.”

A month earlier, it was revealed that Driscoll had posted hundreds of inflammatory Internet comments almost 15 years ago.

Although the media focused on his comments about the U.S. being a “pussified nation,” bloggers who followed Driscoll closely argued that his views on women and sex were the larger problem.

On Monday, “Love, Joe, Feminism” blogger Libby Anne pointed out one of the more disturbing notions from Driscoll’s Internet trolling days.

“Ultimately, God created you and it is his penis. You are simply borrowing it for a while,” Driscoll wrote under the name William Wallace II in 2001. “Knowing that His penis would need a home, God created a woman to be your wife and when you marry her and look down you will notice that your wife is shaped differently than you and makes a very nice home.”

“Therefore, if you are single you must remember that your penis is homeless and needs a home,” he continued. “But, though you may believe your hand is shaped like a home, it is not… And, if you look at a man it is quite obvious that what a homeless man does not need is another man without a home.”…

Christian broadcaster: Ebola could cleanse US of atheists, gay people, and sluts

A Christian radio host who enthusiastically looks for signs the world will end welcomed the Ebola virus as a cleansing force.

“This Ebola epidemic could become a global pandemic and that’s another name for plague,” said broadcaster Rick Wiles on his “Trunews” program.

“It may be the great attitude adjustment that I believe is coming,” Wiles continued. “Ebola could solve America’s problems with atheism, homosexuality, sexual promiscuity, pornography, and abortion.”

Wiles was enthusiastic Tuesday about the arrival of Ebola, but Right Wing Watch reported that he warned the previous day that President Barack Obama may intentionally spread the deadly virus through a mandatory and mysterious vaccine.

That would somehow then allow Obama to declare martial law and force Americans into FEMA camps, the religious right broadcaster theorized.

“If Ebola becomes a global plague, you better make sure the blood of Jesus is upon you, you better make sure you have been marked by the angels so that you are protected by God,” Wiles warned. “If not, you may be a candidate to meet the Grim Reaper.”

It really puts things in perspective. People hate each other for loving their own gender more than animal abuse, sexual abuse, racism, and murder. When there’s no harm in it whatsoever. Seriously, you have to a be a real shit of a person to hate gays. There is no excuse. Homophobes are shit.

Children and teenagers can handle a lesbian or gay orientation within themselves. What they cannot handle is the trauma of concealing it, not being able to express it or talk about it, and the negativity surrounding it by others around them.

Nun tells high school students masturbation causes homosexuality

Controversy at a Catholic High School in Charlotte, North Carolina after Sister Jane Dominic Laurel told students that masturbation causes homosexuality at a school wide assembly last week.

Sister Laurel, a professor of theology at Nashville’s Aquinas College, is being widely condemned after forcefully denouncing homosexuality with outdated statistics, prejudiced stereotypes and other extremist claims.

A Charlotte Catholic student describes the lecture:

She started talking about how gays [sic] people are gay because they have an absent father figure, and therefore they have not received the masculinity they should have from their father … Also a guy could be gay if he masterbates [sic] and so he thinks he is being turned on by other guys. And then she gave an example of one of her gay ‘friends’ who said he used to go to a shed with his friends and watch porn and thats why he was gay. … Then she talked about the statistic where gay men have had either over 500 or 1000 sexual partners and after that I got up and went to the bathroom because I should not have had to been subject to that extremely offensive talk.

Gays And Lesbians More Popular Than Evangelicals Among Voters, Poll

The moral cause embedded in the marriage equality movement is potent, but the debate may come down to a simple matter of popularity.

On Thursday the Human Rights Campaign and Americans for Marriage Equality released the results of a study, entitled “Victory In Sight”, conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research and TargetPoint Consulting that investigated the nuances of voters’ views on marriage equality. More than a simple matter of “Should gays and lesbians be allowed to marry?”, the poll looked at shifts in opinions over time, reasons for such shifts, and differing opinions among ages, faiths, geographic areas and more.

The first question addressed acceptance, comparing voters’ favorable or unfavorable feelings towards gays and lesbians and towards evangelical Christians. In a nearly 80% Christian-identified country, the results might surprise you.

Fifty-three percent of voters said they felt favorably toward gays and lesbians, compared to 42% who felt favorably toward evangelicals. Eighteen percent said they felt unfavorably toward gays and lesbians, while 28% reported unfavorable feelings toward evangelicals.

Pat Roberson: Jesus more likely to stone gays to death than bake them a wedding cake

Televangelist Pat Robertson on Wednesday argued that Jesus would have never baked a wedding cake for LGBT couples because it was more common to stone homosexuals during biblical times.

After a CBN report on a Colorado baker who supported an Arizona bill that would have allowed businesses to discriminate against LGBT couples, Robertson reflected on how Jesus would have responded if a gay couple asked him for a wedding cake.

“I think you’ve got to remember from the Bible, you look carefully at the Bible, what would have happened in Jesus’ time if two men decided they wanted to cohabitate together, they would have been stoned to death,” he explained. “So, Jesus would not have baked them a wedding cake, nor would he he have made them a bed to sleep in because they wouldn’t have been there.”

“But we don’t have that in this country here,” the TV preacher lamented. “So, that’s the way it is.”

Robertson opined that homosexuality was considered to be a “pathology” only “a few years ago,” and now LGBT people were “the oppressors” of religious people.

“What is it about gays, what is it about abortion?” he asked. “Both of them deny the reproduction of human species.”

“It’s as if the devil is saying, ‘I’m going to destroy your progeny any way I can, and if you will kill your baby, that’s fine. I’m with you. If you will deny the chance of having babies, that’s fine too, but I want to destroy your opportunities to reproduce,’” Robertson continued. “As a society, we need to realize where the attack is coming, because it is definitely an attack.”

“Jesus said, ‘I came to give life, and the devil want to steal, kill and destroy,’” co-host Wendy Griffith agreed.

Missouri lawmakers introduce ‘right to refuse service’ religious freedom bill

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — While Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer deliberates the fate of her state’s anti-gay religious freedom bill, legislation was filed on Monday in the Missouri Senate that would allow Missouri business owners to cite religious beliefs as a legal justification for refusing to provide service.

Sen. Wayne Wallingford (R-Cape Girardeau) sponsored the legislation, which states that a governmental authority shall not substantially burden a person’s free exercise of religion unless the government demonstrates that it has a compelling interest.

“We’re trying to protect Missourians from attacks on their religious freedom,” Wallingford told the Kansas City Star…

How American evangelicals may be responsible for Uganda’s anti-gay law

While Ugandan President Museveni accuses the United States of trying to import social imperialism into Uganda by defending homosexual rights, who do you think is behind some of the anti-gay hysteria in Uganda right now?

A group of evangelical Christians from that very same hotbed of social imperialism: the United States of America.

Museveni on Monday signed into law a bill that toughens penalties against gay people and defines some homosexual acts as crimes punishable by life in prison.

Roger Ross Williams belonged to an organization called International House of Prayer in Missouri, whose missionary zeal fell on gays in Uganda. He decided to make a film about what he learned called “God Loves Uganda.”

Someone like evangelist Scott Lively is “an extremist in America,” Williams said, “but when he goes to Uganda he gets taken seriously because of what he represents.”

“He’s an American evangelical, and what an American represents in a place like Uganda – it represents power and wealth.”

“So he goes to Uganda and he can command the president, he can command the parliament for five hours. He did a three-day conference, where he told everyone about the threat of homosexuality, that they were there to recruit their children.”

“And that’s what really sort of started this whole bill on its, where it is now, today, this sort of tragic day.”
